Welcome to the School
The 39th Merriman Summer School honoured the centenary since the death of Michael Cusack, the founder of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Clareman’s life was a period of intensified revivalist activity: linguistic, literary, and sporting.
Speakers at our lectures and seminars addressed themes related to Cusack’s career and the cultural and educational milieu which produced him. There were presentations on the roles played by the Gaelic Union, the Gaelic Journal, and the GAA in the project of de‑Anglicization.
The School featured discussions of citizenship and contemporary Irish society, and the present‑day status and image of Gaelic games. Lectures also addressed the received image of Cusack in the writings of Liam P. Ó Caithnia and James Joyce. The School Programme included a series of seminars on Clare local history, and on the Irish language revival movement in Cusack’s time, as well as poetry readings, set‑dancing workshops, Irish classes and Club Merriman.
A press release announcing the Merriman 2006 Summer School is available online, along with photos taken at our press conference in Croke Park. Information about travel, accommodation and fees can also be found on our website, and a comprehensive retrospective has been added to include lots of photos, audio clips and even some video footage taken during the week we spent in Lisdoonvarna in 2006.
