Brian Merriman — A Special Year

2005 was a special year for admirers of Brian Merriman and his Cúirt an Mheán Oíche ('The Midnight Court').

Having lived most of his life in east Clare, Brian Merriman died in Old Clare Street, Limerick, on 27 July 1805. Cumann Merriman celebrated the poet, his life and times, and in particular his comic masterpiece Cúirt an Mheán Oíche at both the bicentennial Winter School and the Summer School. In addition Cumann Merriman participated in a number of other events during 2005 to mark the bicentenary of the poet’s death.

Further bicentenary celebrations and commemorative events took place during 2005 in east and west Clare, and in Limerick City.
