Cumann Merriman Obituary

Cumann Merriman issued the following obituary following Dr. Ó hIrghile’s death.

Pádraig Ó hIrghile, 1923 – 2008

It is with deep regret Cumann Merriman has learnt of the death of Doctor Pádraig Ó hIrghile, our Patron for the past thirty years.

He was eminently suited to follow Presidents Eamon de Valera and Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh in that office, particularly as he was interested in the Cumann’s progress and activities since its foundation in 1967. It was he, after all, as Minister for Labour and as a Clare T.D., who unveiled the monument to Brian Merriman in Feakle in that same year.

Ever since he has had a lively interest in the Cumann’s aims and progress and indeed was often present with his wife Maeve at the Cumann’s Summer School.

Cumann Merriman would wish to express its sympathy to his widow, his family and to the people of his beloved Clare.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
